Psychedelic Chaplaincy
Psychedelic chaplaincy takes a spiritual care approach to supporting people who have had psychedelic experiences. I bring years of formal training in this work and hold a certificate from UC Berkeley’s Psychedelic Facilitation Program and CIIS’s Certificate in Psychedelic Therapies and Research. I’ve also been mentored by LA-based psychotherapists with extensive experience in this field—wise women for whose healing gifts I am immensely grateful. I bring my therapeutic background as a clinical social worker and decades of pastoral ministry as a priest, chaplain, and spiritual director.
Psychedelic experiences can raise a host of questions for us as spiritual creatures: How do I make meaning from this experience? How can I put the insights I’ve received into practice? How can I become more fully present on a daily basis? How can I ground newfound energy so that it neither overwhelms me nor dissipates? With whom is it safe to speak about such mysterious things? What beliefs am I called to shed and what beliefs might I be called to commit to more deeply? How can I follow the new life that seems to have sprung up within me?
Most psychedelic substances are remarkably safe and may yield some positive result when used with care. In some cases, however, these experiences may throw us into ontological shock, spiritual emergency, or occasion physical or psychological symptoms that cause us pain and confusion. Those who have these experiences may suffer quietly, fearing they may have done something wrong, or not knowing who they can trust to find the help they need. Regardless of whether you view your experience in positive, negative, or neutral terms, I am available to support you with compassion. I can also refer you to or collaborate with other practitioners including medical doctors, psychotherapists, bodyworkers, or other somatic or energetic practitioners as appropriate. I offer my insight based on training and experience but always trust that you know the path forward that is right for you.
These are some of the ways I can support you:
tending new life within you; coming to terms with what has died or needs to be shed
establishing new patterns for relationship with yourself, others, nature, or the divine
discerning major life choices that emerge after a journey
working with, managing, or resolving feelings of anxiety, depression, sensitivity, de-realization, or somatic/energetic symptoms
exploring spiritual gifts and learning to hold them with humility
grounding your experience in a tradition you connect with; understanding material from other traditions that may feel unfamiliar
transitioning from having had a spiritual experience to living a spiritual life
finding new words, narratives, and practices to navigate ontological shock
giving voice to that which needs expression; holding silence before what remains ineffable
learning practices besides or along with medicine work to support spiritual maturity
Psychedelic chaplaincy can be short- or long-term and the frequency of our meetings may change according to your needs. I am available to meet online or at my home in South Pasadena. I welcome people from any faith tradition or none. I am committed to making this work accessible and offer a sliding scale fee for those who need it. 10% of my earnings from this work goes to the Indigenous Medicine Conservation Fund
